Can Marcel

In the sixteenth century this house was owned by the canon, Hug de Palou, from whom it passed onto the Morell, Brondo and Mesquida families. In 1764 it was in the hands of the Marcel family, who were merchants originally from Marseilles. In 1778 it was owned by Antoni Marcel Pujol and in 1864 by Claudi Marcel i Rullan. These days it houses Bar Abaco. Of Gothic origin, the house underwent reforms in the eighteenth century. The main façade is presided over by a large semicircular voussoir arched portal. Once inside there is a large entrance hall, and the house is laid out around a courtyard with Tuscan style columns and pilasters that support segmental arches. The façade onto Calle de Apuntadors contains medieval elements, such as an ajimez (a pair of windows sharing a central column).
