Binissalem is a municipality in the autonomous community of Balearic Islands, Spain. It is located in the center of the island of Mallorca and belongs to the region of Raiguer. It has 6,773 inhabitants according to the 2007 census. The surface area is 29.8 square kilometers, with a population density of 212 inhabitants per square kilometer. The municipality is located at an altitude of 139 meters above sea level and belongs to one of the most important wine regions of the island, formed by the municipalities of Santa Maria del Camino, Binisalem, Sancellas, Consell and Santa Eugenia. The wines produced in this region that pass the established controls are protected by the Binisalem Denomination of Origin. According to linguists, the name of the town may derive either from Banu Ssálam (sons of peace) or from Banu Ssálim (sons of Ssálim).
