The Regional Museum of Artà

Founded in 1927, the Regional Museum of Artà is organised in three sections: Natural History, Archaeology and Ethnology. The Natural History section features an ornithology collection with 250 specimens from 120 species, although mammals, reptiles and fossils are also on display. Examples of prehistoric culture can be seen in the Archaeology section, which displays materials from Talayotic culture (1000 BC ' 123 BC), divided into two themes: burials and religion. The Talayotic settlement of Ses Païsses, located right outside the village, is open to visitors. The Ethnology section presents everyday objects from the district as well as a fine collection of traditional palm craftwork from Europe's only autochthonous species of palm tree: Chamaerops humilis L., commonly known as the fan palm or European palm. The Museum was founded by Professor D. Llorenç Lliteras, among others, and a museum foundation was constituted in 2005.
