Calvià Pueblo

Calvià Vila is the administrative center of the municipality. Located 14 km. from Palma, the capital of the island of Mallorca. It is located in the mountainous foothills of the Sierra de Tramuntana. Geographically the town of Calvià is located in the area with some hills or slight elevations, surrounded by more or less flat lands destined to the cultivation of olive and almond trees. The first news we have of this municipality refer to the existence of the church, which is mentioned in 1248 in the papal bull of Innocent III in which the parishes of Mallorca are recognized under his protection. The village is configured in a central nucleus surrounded by scattered houses, with orchards and fields. The village does not have large buildings, however the church of San Juan Bautista, and some houses such as es Pontet, Can Verger, Ca's Metge vell stand out. The church of San Juan Bautista dates back to 1248, but of this original building, hardly any original remains are preserved as it has been replaced at different times by more modern constructions. The last major renovation dates from 1867. The current building has a historicist facade that combines neo-Romanesque elements with a large neo-Gothic window and two slender twin towers where the bell tower is located. The town hall building, located at the entrance of the village, was inaugurated in 1989 and was designed by the architects Rafael Balaguer and Jaime Vidal, who knew how to combine elements of popular and traditional Mallorcan architecture such as tiles, marés or crushed stone, functionality and the design of an avant-garde construction. Every Monday there is a market where you can buy local products. The festivities of this area are those of Sant Jaume from 20 to 25 July.
